Desk Notes
Tokyo is a city where modern skyscrapers, historic landmarks, and beautiful natural scenery come together to create an unforgettable skyline. Whether you want to admire the city from a high-rise observation deck, enjoy a free panoramic viewpoint, or experience Tokyo from a unique perspective, there are plenty of places offering incredible views. Here are some of the best spots to see Tokyo from above.
Shibuya Sky
Opened in 2019, Shibuya Sky is a spectacular open-air observation platform located at the top of Shibuya Scramble Square. Rising above the 46th floor, it provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of Tokyo and, on especially clear days, visitors may even catch sight of Mount Fuji.
The rooftop area is designed for relaxation and photography, with comfortable hammocks where guests can enjoy the scenery, the famous Sky Edge viewpoint offering unobstructed city views, and the Crossing Light show creating a stunning atmosphere after sunset.
Same-day tickets can be purchased on the 14th floor, but availability is limited and tickets often sell out quickly.
Roppongi Hills Observation Deck
Located on the 52nd floor of Mori Tower, Roppongi Hills Observation Deck, also known as Tokyo City View, offers sweeping views across the capital from every direction.
Visitors can enjoy the scenery from the indoor observation gallery or pay an additional fee to access the outdoor Sky Deck for a more open-air experience. The building also houses the Mori Art Museum on the 53rd floor, where guests can explore a variety of contemporary art exhibitions.
Tokyo Skytree
Tokyo Skytree is not just a viewpoint but a complete entertainment destination where visitors can easily spend an entire day. As Japan’s tallest structure and the second tallest building in the world, it offers extraordinary views from its two observation areas: Tembo Deck and Tembo Galleria.
The surrounding Tokyo Skytree Town features shopping, restaurants, and attractions suitable for families, including entertainment areas for children. The tower is also conveniently connected to Oshiage Station, making access easy for travelers.
Booking tickets for the observation decks ahead of time is recommended, as advance reservations may offer better prices and help avoid waiting.
Tokyo Tower
Tokyo Tower remains one of Tokyo’s most recognizable landmarks, with its famous red-and-white design standing out across the city skyline. Visitors can choose between taking the elevator or climbing the 600 steps to reach the main observation area.
The top deck, introduced in 2018 for the tower’s 60th anniversary, features a stylish mirrored interior that creates unique photo opportunities with a kaleidoscope-like effect.
Sunshine 60 Observatory Tembo Park
Reopened in 2023, Sunshine 60 Observatory Tembo Park offers a refreshed and creative sightseeing experience at the top of Sunshine Tower.
Previously known as Sky Circus, this updated observatory combines city views with a relaxing park-like atmosphere, featuring artificial grass, pleasant floral scents, and gentle background music. Guests can enjoy drinks and snacks at the café or bring their own food for a picnic at Tembo no Oka, which means “observatory hill,” during weekday lunchtime hours.
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, consisting of two connected towers, provides two free observation areas for visitors.
Currently, the South Observation Deck is open and offers impressive views of famous landmarks including Mount Fuji, Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and Tokyo Dome when weather conditions are favorable. Visitors can also stop by the tourist information center on the second floor for additional guidance.
Bunkyo Civic Center Observation Deck
The Bunkyo Civic Center offers a free observation area on its 25th floor and is a great choice for travelers looking for a quieter viewpoint away from large crowds.
The observatory features specially angled windows designed to reduce reflections, allowing visitors to enjoy a nearly 330-degree panoramic view of Tokyo. Since it closes relatively early at 8:30 p.m., visitors should plan their trip accordingly.
Caretta Shiodome
Caretta Shiodome provides impressive views of eastern Tokyo from its 46th floor, accessible by a glass elevator that adds to the experience.
From the observation area, visitors can see Tokyo Bay, Hama-rikyu Gardens, and the Rainbow Bridge connecting to Odaiba. While visiting, travelers can also explore the Advertising Museum Tokyo, which offers free admission.
Carrot Tower
Located directly above Sangenjaya Station, Carrot Tower is named after its distinctive orange-colored exterior. Although the building only has 26 floors, its upper-level observation area provides beautiful views over Tokyo Bay.
On clear days, Mount Fuji may also appear in the distance. Visitors in the area can also take a short walk to see the famous Gorilla Building near Sangenjaya.
Odaiba Marine Park
Situated on an artificial island across Tokyo Bay, Odaiba is connected to the city by the impressive Rainbow Bridge.
Odaiba Marine Park offers one of the most beautiful views of the bridge with Tokyo’s illuminated skyline behind it. The scenery becomes especially magical at night when the Rainbow Bridge lights up.
The area is also family-friendly, with many attractions nearby that children can enjoy.
Rooftop Gardens
For a peaceful escape from Tokyo’s busy streets, rooftop gardens throughout the city provide relaxing green spaces combined with excellent views.
Popular rooftop gardens include those at Tokyo Plaza in Omotesando, Seibu Ikebukuro, and Miyashita Park in Shibuya. These locations allow visitors to enjoy fresh air while taking in the surrounding urban landscape.
Tokyo Dome
Tokyo Dome is a famous entertainment complex used for baseball games, concerts, and large-scale events. It is also home to an amusement park.
One of the best attractions is the Big O Ferris Wheel, where visitors can enjoy elevated views of the city before experiencing the exciting Thunder Dolphin roller coaster.
Helicopter Ride Over Tokyo
A helicopter tour offers a completely different way to experience Tokyo’s skyline. Visitors can choose from short flights of around 10 or 20 minutes or longer experiences lasting more than an hour.
Flying above the city provides unforgettable views of landmarks such as Odaiba Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Bay, and the surrounding skyscrapers from a unique aerial perspective.
Dining with a View
Ending the day with a meal overlooking Tokyo is a memorable experience. Many high-rise restaurants offer beautiful nighttime scenery along with excellent cuisine.
Popular choices include PRIME TOKYO in Shinjuku, Bellovisto at Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel, the rooftop bar at Andaz Tokyo, the Sky Restaurants at Caretta Shiodome, and Sky Lounge Stellar Garden at Prince Park Tower Hotel.
Enjoying dinner while watching Tokyo’s lights spread across the city is one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the capital.

Over the years, I have visited a number of man-made structures around the world that have held the distinction of being the tallest buildings on Earth. So when a family trip recently brought us to Dubai, I knew that seeing the Burj Khalifa would be one of the experiences we could not leave off our “Must Do” list.
