Setting a modern table with vintage china may seem like a challenge at first. Sometimes, grandma’s precious dinnerware doesn’t quite mesh with today’s more contemporary or transitional lifestyles. However, by following a few easy guidelines, you can beautifully integrate these classic pieces and create a table setting that’s both modern and timeless. I’ve discovered several helpful tips that make it simple to bring vintage china into a fresh, stylish table arrangement.
This past year, we’ve spent a lot of time indoors, and while this has come with its challenges, it’s also presented some opportunities. One of the most significant of these has been the extra time to sort through closets, clear out drawers, and rediscover hidden treasures. One such gem I found was a set of Wedgewood china. I’m not entirely sure where it came from—my guess is it originally belonged to Matt’s grandmother and somehow ended up with me a few years ago. It was one of many fascinating heirlooms I uncovered while cleaning out our sideboard on a quiet Sunday afternoon during quarantine.
I wanted to use these pieces, especially since they have sentimental value, but I wasn’t sure how they’d fit with our modern home décor. And then, there was another reason that motivated me: after spending more time at home in the past year than ever before, I was tired of using the same basic white dishes every day (even though I picked them out myself). It felt like it was time for a change.

Don’t Save the "Good" China Just for Special Occasions...

I’m not the only one who’s felt this way. Experts in the world of entertaining have noted a shift in how people approach dining at home. According to Roxanne Marie, the buying director for fashion and home at Goop, in a recent New York Times article, “Our customers are embracing a ‘more-is-more’ approach. During the pandemic, the idea of abundance and glamour at home became a form of escapism. The belief that ‘good china’ should only be used for guests is no longer the norm.”
So why not break out the fine china for dinner tonight? Set a beautiful table, even if it’s just for yourself (or maybe for your family). After all, it’s just another day of the week—and you deserve it! Here’s how you can create an elegant, modern table using vintage china, whether for a regular dinner or a special occasion:

1. Keep A Monochromatic Color Palette

Using a monochromatic color palette on your table adds a sense of refinement. Soft ivory tones, subtly echoed in your linens, dinnerware, flowers, and candles, give the whole setting a sleek, modern feel. Pairing this cohesive color scheme with vintage Wedgewood china introduces an element of surprise and a stunning contrast between the old and new. It’s the perfect blend of timeless elegance and contemporary style.

2. Repetition Is Essential For Modern Design

Simplicity and repetition are key to achieving a sophisticated, modern look. I achieved this by choosing tall ivory pillar candles as a focal point. I also love using soft chiffon, ivory table runners that add a luxurious touch while serving as a lovely foundation for the rest of the table elements.

3. Incorporate Different Heights To Add Dimension

A well-designed table should feature a variety of heights and proportions to keep things visually interesting. For example, I used small bud vases to hold full-sized ivory roses, along with some smaller peach-colored blooms. These delicate bud vases were a perfect complement to the larger pillar candles. They also make it easy to arrange flowers like a pro.
By following these simple steps, you can give your table a sophisticated modern look while celebrating the vintage treasures that hold sentimental value. So, whether it’s a casual Tuesday night or a formal gathering, don’t hesitate to bring out the china—it's time to enjoy it, just because.
