Desk Notes

A member of the rose family, pears are a wonderfully versatile fruit that can be used in both sweet and savory recipes. They can be enjoyed fresh or prepared in many different ways, including stewing, sautéing, baking, roasting, poaching, and grilling.

Because pears naturally contain a high amount of pectin, they are especially useful for making homemade jams, jellies, and fruit spreads.

Nutritional Benefits of Pears

Pears are often compared to apples because they have a similar nutritional profile, but they offer plenty of benefits of their own.

A medium pear contains about 100 calories, provides around 5.5 grams of dietary fiber, and supplies approximately 8% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C.

Although there have not been many studies focused specifically on pears alone, researchers often examine pears and apples together because their nutrient content is quite similar. Research on both fruits suggests that eating pears and apples may be linked to a reduced risk of certain health concerns, including diabetes and stroke.

Where Pears Are Grown

The Pacific Northwest is the leading pear-growing region in the United States, producing more than 80% of the country’s pear supply.

The area’s climate and growing conditions make it especially suitable for cultivating high-quality pears.

When Pears Are Available

The main pear season typically occurs during the fall and winter, but many pear varieties can be found in stores throughout the year.

Different types of pears become available at different times, allowing pear lovers to enjoy this fruit in every season.

How to Choose the Best Pears

Pears are available fresh or canned, but fresh pears require a little patience because they do not fully ripen while still on the tree.

When shopping, avoid pears that feel soft all over, as this usually means they are already overripe and have a mushy texture. Instead, gently press the area around the neck of the pear, where the stem connects to the fruit. A slight softness in this area indicates that the pear is ripe and ready to eat.

If you plan to eat pears several days later, choose fruit with a firm neck so it has time to mature at home.

How to Store Pears Properly

Unripe pears should not be stored in the refrigerator because they need room temperature conditions to continue ripening.

To make pears ripen faster, place them in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple. These fruits naturally release ethylene gas, which encourages pears to ripen more quickly.

Once pears become ripe, they can be placed in the refrigerator to slow down the process. However, refrigeration only delays ripening—it does not completely stop it.

Fresh pears can absorb strong smells, so keep them away from foods with powerful odors, such as onions.

Preparing Pears for Cooking and Eating

A perfectly ripe pear is delicious on its own, but it can also be used in countless recipes.

Like many fruits, peeled or sliced pears will naturally turn brown over time due to oxidation. This does not affect their flavor or quality, but if you want to maintain their appearance, coat the cut surfaces with a mixture of equal parts water and lemon juice or use a commercial citric acid product.

Popular Pear Varieties and Their Best Uses

Anjou pears are among the most widely available varieties. Green Anjou pears have a sweet flavor with a subtle citrus note, while red Anjou pears are slightly sweeter with a mild spicy taste. They are excellent eaten fresh, made into chutney, or baked into pies.

Bartlett pears are available for much of the year and are known for their classic pear flavor. Their soft texture makes them especially suitable for canning and making purées.

Bosc pears have a firm texture and rich flavor, making them ideal for baking and poaching because they hold their shape well during cooking.

Comice pears are prized for their creamy texture, juicy flesh, and exceptional sweetness. Often called Christmas pears, they are best enjoyed fresh, especially when paired with cheese.

Seckel pears are small, naturally sweet fruits that make a perfect snack and are especially charming when packed into lunch boxes.

Flavors That Pair Well With Pears

Pears work beautifully with many complementary flavors. Warm spices such as cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice highlight their natural sweetness.

They also pair well with nuts, including pistachios, almonds, and pecans, as well as rich ingredients like dark chocolate.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Pears

There are countless ways to include pears in your meals. Pear butter and spiced pear muffins make delicious breakfast options.

For dessert, try poaching whole pears in wine, creating a simple pear tart, or adding pears to baked treats.

Pears can also add a refreshing crunch to savory dishes. Use a food processor to slice them into a crisp slaw, or combine roasted pears with bitter greens, Gorgonzola cheese, and pecans for a flavorful salad.

If you have pears that have become too soft and overripe, don’t throw them away. Blend them into smoothies, sauces, or purées. Pear purée can also be frozen and saved for later use, making sure every pear gets enjoyed.
