When studying islands, you may often encounter the term “archipelago.” While it doesn’t simply mean “many islands,” it refers specifically to a cluster or chain of islands. Let’s explore what an archipelago is and examine some notable examples across the globe.

What Is an Archipelago?

An archipelago (pronounced ahr-kuh-peh-luh-goh) is a group of islands closely grouped together, often forming a chain or cluster within a body of water, such as an ocean, sea, gulf, or lake. These islands can include smaller landforms such as islets or atolls.

Archipelagos can feature a mix of inhabited and uninhabited islands, some accessible only by boat. Their origins vary: they may be volcanic in nature, remnants of continental land, or formed through erosion, sediment buildup, or rising sea levels. The size of an archipelago also differs greatly; some span thousands of miles, while others cover less than a hundred miles.

10 Famous Archipelagos Around the World

Archipelagos appear in a wide range of environments—from tropical paradises to icy polar regions. Here are ten well-known examples:

1. Balearic Islands, Spain
Located in the western Mediterranean Sea, the Balearic Islands stretch across roughly 3,000 miles. The archipelago includes four main islands, with Mallorca being the largest, followed by Ibiza. Both islands are popular tourist destinations, drawing visitors for their beaches, culture, and nightlife.

2. Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Canada
This vast northern archipelago covers around 540,000 square miles, consisting of nearly 100 large islands and over 36,000 smaller ones. Located in Canada’s far north, it is bordered by the Beaufort Sea, Arctic Ocean, and Hudson Bay. The islands are separated by the Northwest Passage and remain largely uninhabited due to the extreme Arctic climate.

3. Caribbean Islands, Multiple Nations
The Caribbean forms a sprawling archipelago between North and South America. Cuba is the northernmost island, while Trinidad marks the southern end. The region includes independent countries and islands under foreign governance, totaling more than 700 islands across over a million square miles of ocean.

4. Cyclades, Greece
Situated in the Aegean Sea between Crete and Attica, the Cyclades are named for their circular arrangement around the sacred island of Delos, birthplace of Apollo and Athena according to Greek mythology. Popular islands include Mykonos and Santorini, attracting tourists for their iconic architecture and scenery.

5. Florida Keys, United States
Stretching south of Miami for about 125 miles, the Florida Keys comprise roughly 1,700 islands. Most are uninhabited and reachable only by boat, but over 40 islands are connected by bridges. Key Largo marks the northern start, while Key West is the southernmost point.

6. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Situated about 600 miles off Ecuador’s Pacific coast, the Galapagos Archipelago includes more than 125 islands over 23,000 square miles. Renowned for its biodiversity, the islands host thousands of unique species, inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

7. Hawaiian Islands, United States
This volcanic archipelago features eight main islands, though more than 130 islands and islets are part of the chain. Stretching over 1,500 miles in the northern Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is famous for its beaches, volcanic landscapes, and tropical culture.

8. Lofoten Islands, Norway
Located above the Arctic Circle in the Norwegian Sea, the Lofoten Islands enjoy a milder climate thanks to the Gulf Stream. The archipelago includes seven major islands and several smaller ones, extending across nearly 100 miles. Vestfjord separates Lofoten from the Norwegian mainland.

9. Tierra del Fuego, Argentina/Chile
Positioned at the southern tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego lies where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans converge. Isla Grande is the largest island, split between Chile (60%) and Argentina (40%). Numerous smaller islands surround it, forming an archipelago that stretches roughly 1,000 miles. The region is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Magellan.

10. New Zealand
New Zealand itself is an archipelago in the South Pacific, about 1,000 miles from Australia and Polynesia. It consists of three main islands and over 700 smaller islands. While most smaller islands lie close to the main ones, a few are more than 600 miles offshore. The country sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, giving it a geologically active landscape.

Exploring the Waters Around Archipelagos

Now that you know what an archipelago is and have seen some examples, you can turn your attention to the oceans and seas where these island chains exist. Expanding your knowledge of bodies of water and related vocabulary can help you better understand these unique coastal systems.
